My name is Mary Welch and I’m a senior at Oswego State. I’m studying art…. Graphic design to be exact. During my time here with Th3, I will be giving up dates, reviews, and just general Th3 information.

Th3 started off with a bang in September. The Delvan Art Gallery and Red House Arts Center is where I started my Th3 adventure. Both venues had some very interesting things. The Delavan featured work from Bill Storm and Beverly Stout, both artists where in attendance. I met both, Bill and Beverly. Bill had some fabulous photography and Beverly had amazing ink drawings. They are both fairly local artists, Bill from Liverpool and Beverly from Minetto.

A two second walk down to Red House Arts Center was the next stop, where they were showing a video by Barry Anderson’s that have been playing all over Syracuse. The one that was on view was fantastic! It was like slowly falling down the rabbit hole of bubbles and leaves. If you get a chance go check it out, highly recommend. Then they had this light work show by artist mudboy. Spectacular! The mix of lights, glass, and movement brings the piece together. The piece consisted of LED lights that changed shapes on the wall through glass. I’m by no means giving these pieces any justice but they are amazing and it’s a must see.

Octobers Th3 like Septembers did not disappoint. This Th3 took me to Genesee St. I worked my way from the Point of Contact Gallery to Syracuse stage. The Point of Contact Gallery had Slow Scandal a show by artist Marco Maggi. His drawing on mixed media is something to look at. He uses glass, paper, graphite, and even aluminum foil. His abstract works makes you feel like you’re in a different time and space. Syracuse stage, a new comer to the Th3 family had a great showing of the AIDS quilts. Also in attendance where people from the Syracuse gay and lesbian chorus. They had some of their music/ live concerts playing it was great. The quilts alone are something to see, they move you.

Drawing Tonight! Bartell and "Conversations With Nature" by Tara Hogan in addition to works by the Syracuse Ceramic Guild. The exhibit opens on Thursday, November 15 from 5-8 p.m. and continues through Saturday, December 22, 2007.

Amy E. Bartell has returned for a second exhibition at Delavan Art Gallery to show a new series of mixed media works titled "Archeological Memoir." In her artist statement she describes the body of work as "a glimpse into memory and a quest for directional clues amidst the maps, signs, mysteries, scraps of writing and the compass of magnetic north." Bartell's art work can be found in the collections of numerous individuals and organizations including Carleton College, California State University, Syracuse University and SUNY New York. She is known as a mural artist around the country and as the former Gallery Coordinator of Delavan Art Gallery. Currently, she is a faculty member of the art department at SUNY Oswego. Bartell's approach in her new series raises the question "What do we see when we scan the horizons of our lives? Where do we dig; does 'X' really mark the spot?"

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_tzFOcaX8HAg/RyJujoFZEAI/AAAAAAAAAB8/hEP5LJjwxiE/s320/CrossingAgainsttheLightPR.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5125780884235554818" />Amy Bartell, "Crossing Against the Light" mixed media, 6" x 6"

Tara Hogan is exhibiting a collection of monoprints and mixed media from a new series of work titled "Conversations With Nature." The body of work conveys a dialogue between humans, animals and nature inspired by an interest in environmental consciousness. Hogan has been a graphic designer since earning her B.F.A. in Illustration from Syracuse University eight years ago. Her art has been published in American Illustration, CMYK Magazine, Domino Magazine online and on the back of Bear Magazine. About her distinct style, Hogan explains, "I have a loving appreciation for nature's intricate beauty combined with modern urban style."

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_tzFOcaX8HAg/RyJukIFZEBI/AAAAAAAAACE/tbgD_ZnItMY/s320/conversations+with+nature+PR.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5125780892825489426" />Tara Hogan, "Conversations with Nature" pencil, monoprint and ink on paper

Syracuse Ceramic Guild has returned for a third exhibition at Delavan Art Gallery, featuring ceramics by ten of its members. The Project focuses on what's being done in Paraty, Brazil around a major annual literary festival called FLIP and why people come from around the world to this tiny city on the beautiful green coast of Brazil south of Rio.

Mary launches her project with a visual presentation and discussion next Thursday at 5:30 p.m., May 17th at the Delavan Art Gallery during Th3, Syracuse's Third Thursday city-wide visual arts night. This is the first of several chances to see this presentation and talk about its application locally.

Then over four Wednesday mornings, beginning on May 23rd, Mary hosts a four-part radio series on WAER's Morning Edition exploring parallels between CNY and Paraty, Brazil in making the arts a significant part of economic development.

That's Art Across Borders, beginning on Th3 at the Delavan Art Gallery next Thursday, May 17th at 5:30.

May Th3 Opening at ThINC

OPENING: Thursday, May 17th at 6:30pm
at the Company Gallery.
Free and Open to the Public

On May 17, 2007, ThINC's Company Gallery will open an exhibition of photographs taken by artist, avant-garde filmmaker and video pioneer, Aldo Tambellini. These photographs, taken in 1948 with a Kodak Box Camera, are amongst the first images shot by Mr.Tambellini who was then just 18 years old. Mr.Tambellini documented the people and places of his early life in Syracuse, around Pine Street and E. Genesee. These images depict the life and surroundings of the residents of the 15th Ward, a section of Syracuse of important historical significance.

The 15th ward was originally a Jewish settlement. As the Jewish community started to establish itself in Syracuse, it moved up towards the South of East Genesee Street and many African Americans moved into the 15th ward.

"Color was never an issue to us there, we were all struggling to survive and recover from the war, it was overwhelmingly an economic issue for us," Mr.Tambellini commented upon the dynamic cultural mix represented by the 15th ward.

When asked about the 15th ward, Lori Convington, a Syracuse based artist/activist and historian said: "It was a family community where everyone knew everyone else. They were all part of the same struggle. Some ended up staying on that side of town for generations, until the Urban Development (Removal) in 1963. Urban Development destroyed the moral fiber of the 15th Ward and the familiar sense of family is forever gone. Once again African American people were in Diaspora. Some families moved to the other side of
the tracks South of East Genesee Street while others moved to the South Side.Either way that feeling of a family unit in the African American Community was never felt again in the City of Syracuse. Galleries in big cities and small towns throw open their doors on a common evening, inviting patrons to drop by for a quick look or a leisurely visit. It's convenient for patrons, creates a nice stir in the arts community and brings established and new viewers into the galleries.

Thanks to some committed organizers from the Delavan Art Gallery (Director Bill Delavan and Gallery Coordinator Courtney Rile) and the Everson Museum of Art (Development Director Helen Dewey and communi- cations associate Sarah Tiedemann), Syracuse now hosts a similar citywide arts open, known as Th3, 5 to 8 p.m. each third Thursday of the month, with the exceptions of January, July, August and December.

Fifteen galleries sprawling between Syracuse University and the Delavan Art Gallery participate in Th3; but it's definitely a work in progress, as I recently found out by taking in a brief sampling of the March rendition.

Read the rest of the article by clicking HERE until it's removed from syracuse.com on April 28

Delavan Art Gallery April Th3 Artists In Attendance

The following artists will be in attendance at Delavan Art Gallery during this coming Th3.

A. Brooks Decker
For A. Brooks Decker, the title "Art Across Generations" holds a particular relevance. This exhibit includes both her work and the work of her daughter, Jessica Taylor. Decker writes, "If there has been one constant force in my Life... it has been art." Growing up in a small town on Long Island, Decker watched her fisherman father paint the sea while her mother kept a flower garden. These memories are now entwined in the subject matter of her paintings in a style she calls "romantic realism." Also included in this show are paintings of garden doors inspired by her daughter's photographs. Decker is well known in the region for participating in many local group exhibits and for owning and managing the former Limestone Art Gallery in Fayetteville for ten years.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_T92sMgxwnFw/Rha518pdp6I/AAAAAAAAABk/UkGZGkQj-HE/s320/Untitled.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5050428368606832546" />A. Brooks Decker, "Untitled" acrylic painting

Vivian Geiger
Vivian Geiger is a widely respected photographer who now lives in the area of Liverpool, NY. For this exhibit she is showcasing a new series of abstracts and a new technique of using pastels on photographs. Geiger is an expert on oil coloring on photographs and was hired to write a "how-to" book and act as a consultant on the subject. She is a life member of the Professional Photographers of America (P.P.A.), and was selected as an instructor in their "Super Monday" program, a position that the President of the P.P.A. states is intended for the most legendary photographers in the industry. Her resume includes traveling and lecturing to professional photographers internationally as well as teaching classes at Winona School, N. Carolina University, the Rochester Institute and Syracuse University, among others. Geiger has received the Post-Standard Achievement Award in the Arts.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_T92sMgxwnFw/Rha52Mpdp7I/AAAAAAAAABs/wBz5SuYJwqI/s320/Milkweed.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5050428372901799858" />Vivian Geiger, "Milkweed" photography

Seymour Magnet Elementary School Art Teacher Kelly Moser
For the fourth year, Delavan Art Gallery is pleased to host the work of children from Blodgett, Seymour Magnet and Solace Elementary Schools. Students from the classes of Stacy Griffin, Kelly Moser and Simone Montgomery have the chance to see their work in a professional setting and to sell the work to raise money for themselves as burgeoning artists and for school art supplies. A special reception will be held for students on Friday, April 20, from 4 - 6 PM, featuring a performance by Seymour Guitar Ensemble. The ensemble consists of student guitar players in the 4th and 5th grades and is spearheaded by Seymour’s music teacher, Kevin Dorsey. The public is encouraged to attend this reception.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_T92sMgxwnFw/Rha528pdp9I/AAAAAAAAAB8/J7v8nsPDcHE/s320/Marissa+Rae+Olivarria.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5050428385786701778" />Marissa Rae Olivarria (Blodgett Elementary School), "Lichenstein People" marker and tempera paint

Please join us at Delavan Art Gallery for Th3 this Thursday from 5-8 PM to meet A. Campeggi was then released by the studios and felt very lost. He and his family used to vacation in the island of Elba, where he moved to at that time and during those days, his work was influenced by the nature around him, the colorings, shapes and sandy landscapes... He was trying to redefine himself as an artist. He had a show of this work and some of his major critics questioned the new style rather severely.

Eventually, this evolved into what Campeggi is doing today, which somehow
combines styles and themes from his life-long career. The Redhouse will be showing his more contemporary work.

Tonight's Th3 Info

Up to date info for tonight March 15th:

The Urban Video Project will be at Spark Contemporary Art Space.

ThINC's Company Gallery will be open with the following exhibition:
MUTE is an exhibition of silent videos from a selection of international artists that will run 24/7 March 14 through April 15th 2007. see http://www.thincblog.wordpress.com for more info

Special Collections Research center will close at 6 PM. The figures that occupy his works are often caricatures of an infinite variety of possible selves. Much of his work deals with the creation of a meaningful reflection of the emotional states inherent in everyday experience. Often employing the comic or the grotesque, these drawings are multiple and fractured personalities looking for a cobbled identity. John Hill received his BFA in Painting from Winthrop University in 2003. He is currently pursuing his Masters.

*******************************************************************

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_6JIJwrhT88k/RfRL1uRZn0I/AAAAAAAAAKg/f3XK-R2j2cQ/s320/uvp.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5040737269260590914" />

*******************************************************************

Urban Video Project : Using multiple video projections, 6-channel sound, and performance, UVP explores new forms of cartography that challenge traditional functions and perceptions of urban space and identity.
40 Below and SU Grad Students to Shed Light on Syracuse Arts Venues
Video Art will Illuminate Galleries, Connective Corridor, Starting Feb. 15

Thursday, February 15 marks the start of the Urban Video Project (UVP), a public arts initiative seeking to bring art to the streets and buildings of Syracuse. Inspired by the Connective Corridor and Th3, an arts open held on the third Thursday of every month, the project is the brainchild of the 40 Below Public Arts Task Force and three Syracuse University graduate students.

Working closely with a number of university and community partners, UVP will produce a series of experimental outdoor video projections throughout the year, beginning with the return of Th3 on Feb. 15 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on the exteriors of three of the 15 Th3 venues:

• Spark Contemporary Art Space, 1005 E. Fayette St.
• The Warehouse Gallery, 350 W. Fayette St.
• Delavan Art Gallery, 501 W. Fayette St.

“Video art is a unique form of public art because it can inject a sense of energy into a given environment,” said Blake Carrington, a first-year graduate student at SU’s College of Visual and Performing Arts, who along with Christopher Gianunzio and Colin Todd are the creative force behind UVP. “We hope that this project will help to draw attention to Syracuse’s art scene and cause people to look at our city in a new way.”

UVP, the 40 Below Public Arts Task Force and Syracuse University want to expand the project to include more Th3 venues, other spontaneous projections, as well as the possibility of fixed video art installations along the Connective Corridor that could accommodate content from students and visiting artists. The end goal would be to establish Syracuse as center for video art innovation.

“The organic and collaborative origins of this project illustrate the underpinnings of Scholarship in Action,” says SU Chancellor Nancy Cantor. “These artists, who happen to be graduate students, are intrinsically motivated to communicate with, and promote critical reflection within, the community through their art. In 40 Below and TH3, they found like-minded community partners to make this happen, with support from SU.”

Th3 is free and open to the public with transportation provided by the Connective Corridor Shuttle Bus. For more information about Th3, go to www.th3syracuse.com. A route schedule/map for the Connective Corridor Shuttle Bus is available online at connectivecorridor.syr.edu. For more information on how you can become involved in the 40 Below Public Arts Task Force, go to groups.yahoo.com/group/publicartsyracuse or www.40belowsummitt.com.

-more-

About Th3

The citywide art open, known as Th3, began in 2006 as a celebration of Syracuse's thriving art scene and a developing collaboration amongst Syracuse's visual arts organizations. Each venue provides a different flavor of the Syracuse visual arts scene. Most venues offer refreshments and a unique programming for that special evening.
Th3 provides a common day and time for the public to visit fifteen of Syracuse’s visual art venues for an entirely free, entertaining and educational evening. With evening hours of 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., people can stop by a gallery or museum after work or bring their families. Visitors from out of town can make an evening of it by dining at one of the many highly praised restaurants on the Th3 route.
Participating Visual Art Venues:
Community Folk Art Center (CFAC)
Delavan Art Gallery
Everson Museum of Art
Eureka Crafts
Light Work (Robert B. Inspired by the Connective Corridor and Th3, the project is the brainchild of the 40 Below Public Arts Task Force and three Syracuse University graduate students. UVP will produce a series of experimental outdoor video projections throughout the year. Beginning with this month’s Th3, video projections will be featured at:

Spark Contemporary Art Space, 1005 E. Fayette St.
The Warehouse Gallery, 350 W. The shuttle bus will stop at all marked Centro bus stops along the Connective Corridor. For more information about the Connective Corridor and Centro’s Shuttle Bus, please visit connectivecorridor.syr.edu. The ride is FREE.

About Th3:
Making Syracuse’s active visual art scene more accessible to the public, Th3 provides a common day and time for viewing art. On the Third Thursday of each month, 15 visual art venues will be open from 5 - 8 p.m. for Th3, a citywide art open. Th3 is a galvanizing force in supporting and recognizing local artistic achievements and the creation and display of visual art in Syracuse. His work is a compilation of photographs of nomadic people from Mali, West Africa. These portraits depict the often harsh reality of their daily lives. Also included in this exhibition are wood cut prints inspired by the series of photographs. Albertson is currently a graduate student in the Creative Arts Therapy Program at Nazareth College in Rochester, NY. He has a studio art background with an emphasis on illustration and graphic design.

Joan Carlon- "About 7 PM" ink and graphite, 24" x 17"

Joan Carlon's desire to create drawings based on stories of forced emigration was first motivated by the power of the stories themselves. Impacted by personal experiences, Joan Carlon explains in her artist statement, "It seemed natural for me to become interested in history and in the stories of civilians whose lives are irrevocably changed by war; the Vietnamese, Cubans, Bosnians and now Africans from Sudan, Somalia and Liberia. It is the stories of these people that I have collected and that have inspired this group of drawings." The stories come from a collection of tales from newspapers and personal narratives told directly to Carlon. The drawings themselves balance the raw subject matter with Carlon's interest in space, rhythm and strong contrast. As she writes, "The drawings string silhouetted black images, areas of grey wash and graphite pencil across the picture plane and empty spaces."

William Finch- "Shepherd 2" oil paint, 60" x 28"

William Finch paints primarily from a warm, vibrant color palette of oil paints. The subject matter of his work is inspired by what the artist describes as "coming from his own Christian world view." In his artist statement, he writes, "It is with that foundation- whether painting rich and textured floral scenes, capturing snapshots of life, showcasing man's present plight for completion and meaning, or making commentary on the persecuted church... his work reflects the redemptive and points to a final culmination where the undesirable and broken can be made whole." Finch is currently a Design Director at Chase Design in Skaneateles and has previously been employed as an art director in several Central New York advertising agencies. He has been involved in the arts since attending Syracuse University's School of Visual and Performing Arts.

Virginia Hovendon- "In the Shadow" charcoal on canvas, 36.5" x 48"

Virginia Hovendon's large charcoal drawings on canvas and linen of West African women are directly inspired by the photographs of James Albertson, who is also exhibiting during January and February at Delavan Art Gallery. Virginia Hovendon explains her fascination with this imagery this way: "I have always loved portraits, faces and especially faces with hands are extremely compelling to me. If you look at these women, with all their lines and wrinkles, some from the sun and some from time, possible worry, I often wonder if their lives are really so different from our own. There are common threads in the human condition that tie us all together." Hovendon attended Wells College for her undergraduate work in Drawing and Painting and received a Master's degree in Education from Syracuse University. She currently lives in Copenhagen, NY where she teaches art at Copenhagen Central School and serves as Director of the Scholastic Art Awards.

Stephen Ryan- "Trumpet Player" watercolor, 15" x 20"

Stephen Ryan enjoys the challenge of impressionistic, wet-to-wet watercolors. "I've always painted people, because," he explains, "what makes us interesting is how different we all are. There is so much more we can read into a person and situation than into a landscape. However, the best part is hearing what people take away, as an impression, when they view my art. It's as different as the subjects I paint." Stephen Ryan has won many awards for his watercolors and runs his own graphic design studio in Skaneateles, NY. Ryan is also an Adjunct Professor of Art at SUNY Onondaga Community College, teaching Computer Graphics and Advanced Graphic Design.

Delavan Art Gallery is a 3,800 square foot showcase and sales venue for fine art created by area artists. Delavan Art Gallery opens “The Human Condition” from 5 - 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 25, and is open through February 24 on Thursday and Friday afternoons from 12-6 p.m., Saturdays from 10 a.m.- 4 p.m. and at other times by appointment.

Eureka Crafts "Meet the Artist" and Open Studio night

Ron Kalinoski and Amy Patricia Komar have been working in the clay studio in the back of the building that houses Eureka Crafts. This exhibition features stunning black-and-white photographs by William Earle Williams. The images call attention to the sites made special through these soldiers’ contributions, so that their story becomes a part of our American story. Williams has been pursuing this series for over ten years. He has photographed significant Civil War sites in the South and North, recording both historically recognizable as well as forgotten locations.

A Journey Towards Hope: Underground Railroad Sites in Oberlin, Ohio

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_6JIJwrhT88k/RcDNTJ24QQI/AAAAAAAAAB0/gknxOjRx8Ik/s320/close.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5026242913092780290" /> This exhibition, featuring the photography of Coriana Close, captures the history of Oberlin, Ohio’s Underground Railroad. The images include large format color photographs of buildings in Oberlin that were essential to the abolitionist movement.

Un/Common Threads: Selections from the Light Work Collection

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_6JIJwrhT88k/RcDM1524QOI/AAAAAAAAABk/5KWvaZADPjc/s320/uncommon.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5026242410581606626" /> This exhibition, curated by Syracuse University graduate student Kaylen Williams, features images from the Light Work Collection. The work selected explores how contemporary artists approach issues of ethnic and cultural identity. The exhibition features images in which the photographers visually explore the concept of identity by either looking at their own culture or that of their subjects. The images focus on social constructs including race, gender, ethnicity, cultural heritage, sexuality, and class.

Next Th3 is February 15 2007

Thanks to everyone for a great start this past fall and here's to an awesome new year of Th3s!

-Courtney Rile from Delavan Art Gallery

photos from past Th3s

September 21st, 2006: The Warehouse Gallery

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_6JIJwrhT88k/RbqCeJ24QJI/AAAAAAAAAAk/xWz8Okl5870/s320/DSC_0052.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5024471788838994066" />
October 19th, 2006: Eureka Crafts

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_6JIJwrhT88k/RbqCeZ24QKI/AAAAAAAAAAs/6GNSod_J6aM/s320/EurekaWindowOct19Th3.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5024471793133961378" />
November 16th, 2006: Delavan Art Gallery

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_6JIJwrhT88k/RbqCeZ24QLI/AAAAAAAAAA0/ZWJ5wZcp71U/s320/LindaAbbeywithTh3Goer.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5024471793133961394" />
